International Student Program Overview: St. Paul’s First Lutheran International Student Program is rated a Best In Class and Best in Value School in Los Angeles by Yelp.
Type of School: St. Paul’s First Lutheran is part of the fourth largest private school system in United States, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). WELS has a rich tradition of operating highly regarded schools across the United States for over 165 years. St. Paul’s First Lutheran operates a private Christian elementary and junior high school teaching children from kindergarten to grade 8.
Accreditation: St. Paul’s First Lutheran School is fully accredited by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Schools School Accreditation (WELSSA) program and the National Council for Private Schools Accreditation (NCPSA) receiving exemplary accreditation in 2016 for achieving over 96% of the required standards.
Location: St. Paul’s First Lutheran School is located in North Hollywood on the east side of the San Fernando Valley, five miles north of Hollywood, and 12 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
School Enrollment: Approximately 135 students with a student/teacher ratio of 13:1.
Goals and Purpose: The school program provides students with a Christian, challenging, and diversified curriculum that prepares them for this life and eternity. Opportunities are given for students to develop their God-given talents in music, athletics, drama, public speaking, art, and technology. Students work in a safe and healthy environment with an atmosphere of Christian love and care.
Housing for Students: St. Paul’s First Lutheran School and Church families share their homes with international students for the 9 ½ months of school. Our host family program consists of families who are committed to providing a caring home-away-from-home experience for these students. This provides a wonderful opportunity to practice English and grow in a supportive, family environment.
Advisory Services: Our International Program Coordinators work to support international students with day-to-day concerns, communicating with parents, assisting with necessary medical needs and more.
Transportation: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is approximately 25 miles from the North Hollywood area. There are multiple choices for hospital, health, and shopping needs in the immediate vicinity. St. Paul’s staff members provide needed transportation arrangements for international students.
School Year Calendar: Classes begin the last week of August and end the first week of June each year. School is closed for two weeks at Christmas/New Year’s and one week in the Spring.
ESL Courses: English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is provided on a limited basis. Additional instruction can be contracted for an additional fee to support becoming proficient in the English language.
High School Preparatory and Guidance: Special assistance is provided for high school planning and preparation. Additional assistance and guidance is available to complete an admissions application to our area Lutheran high school, California Lutheran High School in Wildomar, California.
- Academic Support Services: Tutoring is available as well as scheduled study halls with supervision.
- Activities and Athletics: Students are encouraged to participate in activities outside the classroom. Sports such as cross country, flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, track, softball, and baseball are offered depending on student interest. Many students participate in drama, choir, band, handbells, and student council.
- Academic Test Score Results: Students in grades 3-8 complete national standardized tests three times during the school year. Most often, St. Paul’s students score above the national average in core subject areas. In 2017, over 85% of the 8th grade class was above the national average in Mathematics and two-thirds of the class was above average in Language, Science, and Reading.
